I have just come across a fabulous visual representation of what social innovation on the new Indigenous Innovation Blog at the National Centre of Indigenous Excellence  http://ncie.org.au/blog/indigenous-innovation/. The Gulbenkian Institute (Fundacao Calouste Gulbenkian) and SIX (Social Innovation Exchange) have come up with this visual introduction to social innovation as part of their Fix the Future program.

Something needs to change. It’s clear that industrial age institutions and systems aren’t the answer to today’s complex social and environmental issues.

Albert Einstein once said, “We can’t solve problems by using the same kind of thinking we used when we created them.” So how do we come up with real solutions to the big issues facing all of us?

It’s time to change our approach. It’s time to build new institutions and develop new systems. It’s time to move from industrial age leadership to 21st century buildership. It’s time to stop saying they need to do this or they need to fix that. It’s time for us to come together and take action - after all, there is no they, we are the they.

So how might we address local and global societal problems? How might we come up with solutions that are wholistic, sustainable and have real impact?

How might we be the change we wish to see in the world?By bringing together diverse community members, socially innovative thinkers and progressive leaders in the not-for-profit, corporate, social, government and academic sectors.

By coming together to explore challenges, identify opportunities, envision pathways, and lay down foundations for real solutions to today’s pressing social and environmental issues.

By gathering together to cocreate pathways to better futures for all, and implementing plans for action.

At Gathering '11 you will:

]]><![CDATA[Handing it on to help the homeless]]>Thu, 05 Aug 2010 20:00:59 -0800http://www.socialadvantage.com.au/1/post/2010/08/handing-it-on-to-help-the-homeless.htmlRecently I have taken on the role as National Campaign Manager for the fantastic organisation, StreetSmart. StreetSmart tackles homelessness at the grassroots.  They are a unique bridge between the community and small, ‘hard to reach’ agencies and projects that assist people experiencing homelessness or at risk. We support critical services and emergency aid as well as projects that promote social inclusion, empowerment and sustainable change for people who are homeless. When money is raised from the public through their restaurant events, 100 per cent of donations are distributed in the form of grants. To date we have raised and distributed over $1,180,000 to 272 grassroots projects.   My job is to help get more restaurants recruited to the annual restaurant event.  Anyone can help just be handing on the information flyer about the campaign to their favourite restaurant.  Just print the flyer here.  The lovely Sarah Wilson explains how easy it is the hand it on to help.
